Orff Music Education Anatolia Project – Protocol Signed

For the first time in Turkey – A very important step towards improving music education:

Turkey’s Ministry of National Education, pianist twin sisters Güher and Süher Pekinel, and Turkey Orff Centre have signed a protocol concerning the education of 180 teachers in 6 provinces in the Orff Approach.

Artists Güher and Süher Pekinel and Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Education Yusuf Tekin took part in the signing ceremony at the Ministry in Ankara on September 13. The “Orff Music Education Anatolia Project” which the Ministry of Education has accepted into the official curriculum and will provide Orff Approach education to 180 teachers in 6 different provinces of Turkey

In his speech Undersecretary Mr. Tekin expressed that one of his fundamental priorities has been to make sure that young children are guided towards social, artistic and sportive activities according to their talents and capabilities. Tekin stated that a pilot scheme would be implemented from next year onwards to make sure that parents and children don’t have to make a choice between academic achievement and the development of such talents anymore and continued: “We will integrate their participation in such activities into their academic data. If our children continue attending courses from the moment they start primary school or even secondary school, it will be used as grades to place them into high school. We are currently planning a similar grading system for university entrance in accordance with YÖK. This matter is very important to us. Tekin pointed out gravity of the unreasonable expectation of international success from talent discovered after the age of 18 and added “Our new education programme has been design keeping this in mind. The grading of students has been reevaluated. Parents will no more experience the dilemma of having to asking themselves “shall we send our child to a music course, find more artistic opportunities, or send them to math or science courses?”

Süher Pekinel thanked the Minister of National Education İsmet Yılmaz, former minister Nabi Avcı, YÖK Director Yekta Saraç, Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Education Yusuf Tekin, Director of the Board of Education and Discipline Alparslan Durmuş, Director General of Teacher Education and Development Semih Aktekin for their support of the project.
