Veriko Tchumburidze – Violinist

First price winner of 15th international Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition 2016

Veriko Tchumburidze, born in 1996, began her studies at Mersin University State Conservatory at the age of four as a student of Selahattin Yunkuş. She studied at Mersin University State Conservatory as a student of Lili Tchumburidze and continued her studies in 2010 with Prof. Dora Schwarzberg at the “Hochschule für Musik” in Vienna, as a scholar of the “Young Musicians on World Stages” (YMWS) project created and mentored by Güher & Süher Pekinel with financial support of Tüpraş.

Having been accepted to the Musikhochschule München, Tchumburidze continues her studies with Ana Chumachenco and attends her masterclasses in various countries. Tchumburidze attended Prof. Igor Ozim’s and Prof. Dora Schwarzberg’s masterclasses.

When just 8 years old, Tchumburidze won First Prize at the “Gülden Turalı National Violin Competition 2004”, and in 2006 received First Prize at the “Georgian National Competition”. In 2012, at 16, she won the first prize at the “7th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians” with the highest score and consensus of the jury; accordingly she was invited to several international concerts and festivals in various countries including Russia, Switzerland and Germany.

Tchumburidze was chosen in 2013 by Andante Classical Music Magazine in Turkey as “Best Emerging Musician” and performed at the opening concert of the “41th Istanbul Music Festival” with the Borusan Symphony Orchestra. In the same year she was invited to participate in the “Seiji Ozawa Academy Master Class” and the “Verbier Festival” in Switzerland and to continue her studies with the famous violinist and pedagogue Ana Chumachenco, with whom she is working currently in Munich.

Her concert with the YMWS scholars in March 2014 at the Zurich Tonhalle Chamber Series was recorded live and published by Lila Plak as a DVD with interviews of DRS Radio. Immediately after the DVD release in 2014, Tchumburidze was invited to perform with the Swiss Chamber Orchestra in Lucerne KKL. After this concert she was chosen by “Orpheum Musik Stiftung” Zürich, which prepares extraordinary musicians for a world career, to release a CD series together with the Munich Chamber Orchestra under the baton of conductor Howard Griffiths on the occasion of Orpheum’s 25th anniversary in cooperation with Sony Classics.

As the first Turkish musician ever, Tchumburidze was accepted to participate in the renowned “XV. International Tchaikovsky Competition 2015”. Tchumburidze played with international Orchestras like the “Züricher Kammerorchester”, the “Münchener Kammerorchester”, the “Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester”, the “Musikkollegium Winterthur” and the “Russian State Symphony Orchestra”.

In 2015 as part of “Trio Arte” she played with fellow YMWS scholars Cellist Dorukhan Doruk and Pianist Yunus Tuncalı, at the Boğaziçi Albert Long Hall, Notre Dame de Sion Concert Hall and “D-Marin Classical Music Festival”. Further concerts with the “Trio Arte” were performed  within the chamber music series at the Süreyya Opera and Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall. In addition they performed the “L.V. Beethoven Triple Concerto” with Güher and Süher Pekinel and the Istanbul and Izmir Symphony Orchestras, as well as with the  “Presidential Symphony Orchestra” Ankara.

In January 2016 she performed in Zurich/Switzerland to promote her first realised CD by Sonny and gave various interviews with the most important international press. The same month, Tchumburidze recorded John Williams’ score for “Schindlers List” for Sony Classics with the “Brandenburgisches Kammerorchester” and Howard Griffiths. Due to her performances, Tchumburidze was elected by “Orpheum Stiftung” to headline the “Zürich Opernhaus Film Festival Opening Concert” on 1st October 2016.* (please see list below for upcoming concerts.)

As a member of “Trio Arte”, Tchumburidze received the first prize for chamber music at the “Pietro Argento International Music Competition” in June 2016 at Gioia del Colle, Italy. “Trio Arte” performed  with world famous violist Gérard Caussé a live filmed recital program right after the competition at the 44th IKSV International Istanbul Music Festival. “Trio Arte” performed also the world premiere of renowned composer Özkan Manav’s work “Ludus Modalis” specially written for this event and for the Trio.

In October 2016, at the tender age of 20, Veriko Tchumbridze won the First Prize at the prestigious International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition to attract immediate attention of the musical world.

After winning Wieniawski Competition, Tchumburidze has been invited to play at numerous festivals such as Beethoven Easter Festvial, Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy, Musica Mundi Festival, Musical Olympus Foundation Festival to play with Nicholas Angelich, Maxim Vengerov, Michael Sanderling and many others.
